The Territory

It is the southernmost district in the province; from Enna, Barrafranca can be reached by taking the Pergusa main road after the village of Pergusa. Its origins are very old, probably deriving from ancient Hibla, Heraia or Galatina, Roman fortifications known as Callonania. Its more recent history, however, is linked to the Barresi family, from which the town took its name in 1529. The contrast between the old town centre and the more modern areas makes the tour around the town very pleasant. The 18th century main church is of particular interest. This late Sicilian baroque structure houses a precious canvas painting of the "Santa Maria della Purificazione" attributed to Filippo Paladino. Also worth visiting is the church of Maria SS. della Stella. As you pass through the streets of the doors, you meet the so-called "Botteghe", small rooms on the first floor which up to a few decades ago were used as artisan shops in Barrafranca.
