Gresti or Pietratagliata Castle

It rises between Aidone and Valguarnera, in the "Gresti" district; after which the recent denomination of "Gresti" attributed to it. In a happy location, it dominates wide valleys, controls the landscape leading from the north to the south est side of Sicily and almost guard the Gornalunga river, once rich in waters. The same Diodoro Siculo makes reference to a road that used to connect Siracusa to Agira passing from Morgantina. The building was already existing during the Arabic domination period, although the nowadays emerging part possess all the Sicilian-medioeval architecture’s characteristics of the Norman age. Rebuilt by the Normans, the castle passed in the XIV century, to the Gioieni family that kept it until 1648, when it reached the Graffeo. At last it became property of the Baron Ignazio Lalumia of Licata.
