Symbol of the main town, is one of the wider and important existing medieval castles in Sicily (it seems it has been even the abode of a Sicano King). At the slaves revolt time it was the basis against the Lucio Calpurnio Pisone army. During the Norman domination, at the time of Conte Ruggero, a Lombardy legion have been stationing down there: after that comes the castle name. According to some regional historians like Villafranca, Di Blasi and Falautano, the castle has been ordered from Federico II of Sweden; others say it goes back to the Angioini. But the thesis more commonly accepted is that the castle, of very ancient origin, has been completely restructured from Federico II of Sweden and that it has endured many modifications in the course of numerous centuries.

Erected on a plateau, the castle was protected by a steep escarpment, its natural defence in the lower part of the fortress. Moreover it was isolated by a moat, connected to the inferior part of the city by a drawbridge. In the first courtyard, called "square of the armed", has been arranged a great open air theatre, un ideal site for summer shows. Through the "Door of the Chain" you get to the second courtyard, rich of green, and named "of the food supplies" because it was seat of stables and other premises used like granaries and kitchens. The Third courtyard, "Saint Martino’s square", is the best conserved one. There you can find the Pisana Tower, one of the six remained towers. From its top you can admire an immense panorama. The King’s rooms, according to father Giovanni’s writings, was adorned with great refinement.
