Federico’s Tower

Open every day
from 9,00 to 19,00

In the middle of a verdant garden, on the top of a wide hill, rises the Federico’s tower. It has an octagonal shape and a solid structure in carved stone. Through a grooved-in-the-wall door, it is possible to get downstairs, that is covered by a segmented vault. The vault receives the light from three loopholes. A winding staircase dug in the wall puts in communication the first to the second floor. From the second floor you can get to the terrace. All the architecture of the building is uniformly in fourteenth-century Sicilian style. The buyer, Federico II of Aragon, made to build it between 1300 and 1306. All around the tower there are the rests of the Byzantine castle destroyed by Al-Abbas in 859. The tower defence was entrusted to the other surrounding towers and to the citadel walls that used to encircle the hill and that today, unfortunately, do not exist anymore.
