In 1132 Russo Rubeo was appointed Lord of Sperlinga. This is the first historically sure piece of news regarding this fortress dug in the rock. A steep flight of stairs carved in the rock leads to the front door, which presents traces of the original drawbridge. Going beyond the vestibule, you can see a portal. On its arc is placed the epigraph: "Quod siculis placuit sola Sperlinga negavit", that recalls the castle Lords’ fidelity to the Angevins during the Vesper War. Passing through a series of rooms, some of them dug in the rock, you arrive to the west square, where there are the ruins of Santa Lucia’s little church. All around the town you can visit a group of caves, used like houses, dug and camouflaged in the rock. We don’t have any historical reference about them. To get to Sperlinga you have to take S.S. 120 between Gangi and Nicosia.
