The Territory

Up to the 18th century, Catenanuova was only a crossroads until Andrea Riggio decided that one could build an urban centre here. The importance of Catenanuova as a strategic point of communication is demostrated by the existence of an inn, Cuba, where the German writer Wolfgong Goethe and Vittorio Amedeo of Savoia, king of Sicily and Sardinia, stayed during a stop over on their journeys across the island. Even today Catenanuova is still an important communication centre between the motorway and railway which link the two main cities of Sicily, Palermo and Catania.
