ENNA-S.MARCO’S CHURCH

Next to the place of six December, stands S.Marco’s church. This church. Among the most beautiful of the city, was built over the ruins of an ancient synagogue, after the expulsion of the Judes from Sicily between 1492 and 1493. This worship place was restored between the half of XVII and of XVIII centuries putting on the current look. The building has a single aisle. This one was enriched with baroques plaster of exquisite workmanship, while the floor, of the eighteenth century, is realized with valuable maiolica. A false dome painted in fresco on the ceiling expand with clever artifice the real space of the church.
The high altar of the seventeenth century is wooden made and it is almost completely covered by first-quality gold. In the raised presbytery which completes the aisle, behind the high altar , we can admire the case of refined carved and gold-plated wood ordered by Antonio Rallo in the 1708, a Trapanese teacher, and realized upon a drawing of Agatino Daidone of Calascibetta. In the middle of the case, inside a niche of shell’s valve, is placed the beautiful wooden statue of Marco the Evangelist.
