The Territory

Stone is the main element in the town. A hard white stone materialising in roads, buildings and small houses in the old town centre of Pietraperzia. The same houses and buildings which, only by looking at them, take you back in time, throught history and the vicissitudes of men of arms, noble families and heroes of the homeland. A tour of the town should include the following: the main church which, as well as its imposing colonnade and stucco works on the dome valut, has an altar piece by Filippo Paladino and the sarcophagus of the Barresi princes of Pietraperzia, one of which is done in very elegant Egyptian marble containing the remains of Dorotea Barresi, female viceroy of Naples. Numerous pilgrims are attracted to the Sanctuary of "la Madonna della Cava", built on the spot where the holy image was discovered in 1223, an icon which today is preserved in the church. Take an excursion across rocky terrain and you will come across endless small archaeological sites testimony to ancient human settlements in the whole area: the kiln tombs in the Rancito district, the remains of a large, rural Hellenistic settlement in the Runzi district, and the remains of an ancient Sican town (probably Krastos) in the Tornabè-Mercato d'Arrigo area.
