Natural Reserve of the Campanito and Sambughetti mounts

Ph. G.M. Amato

It’s the province’s greatest natural reserve and extends for a total of 2358 Ha. touching the municipalities of Nicosia and Cerami. It was constituted to protect a ridge, parallel to the Nebrodi mounts. It holds a natural environment characterized by a very remarkable natural biodiversity. Its higher parts are the Sambughetti mounts, 1559 m. above the sea level., and the Campanito mounts, 1514 m. above the sea level. They are the highest mount-tops of the district. It contains various natural habitats even very different between themselves: mountain pastures, small humid zones densely populate by specialized fauna and flora, one of the best preserved beech-wood of all the Nebrodi mounts, the oak-wood of Giumenta’s forrest, and the cork-wood of the Rabbit's mount. The landscape appears therefore particularly evocative and similar to that of the Alpin Arc’s Mounts, constituting an “unicum” in the insular inland. It is possible to reach the reserve taking the S.S. 117 until Km 29, turning then on the left according to the signal, reporting the route to cover.
