Capodarso Mount and Southern Imera Valley Oriented Nature Reserve

Ph. G.M. Amato

Entrusted in management to Italia nostra, this oriented nature reserve extends on a territory of 1.485.1 hectares. The great reserve dimensions, (it is sited between the Enna’s and Caltanissetta’s provinces, in the municipalities of Pietraperzia, Enna and Caltanissetta), make of it one of the greater protected areas of the island. The protected area is placed along the median part of the Salso’s Valley or southern Imera and encircles the Capodarso mount’s gorges. The Salso river, which waters present a high salt content, crosses this protect area, in past times navigable. It has been an important fluvial way of communication between the coasts and the inside of the island. It seems that along it went upstream the Mycenaean that frequented the agrigentina marine; surely the valley helped the Greek penetration. In fact the whole area presents several antique centres explored or still to explore like Capodarso, Sabucina, Gebel Habib, Mount S. Giuliano and Juculia. The Capodarso mount was center of an ancient (still anonymous) ellenizzato Sicilian installation. It is integrating part of the reserve: because of the archaeological presences (between them possess a large prominence the incredible flight of steps towards the empty space) but also for the scenographic position of its long calcarenite cliff; and for the sulphur mines of Giumentaro and Giumentarello, today abandoned.
