The Territory

Its ancient mining past makes Valguarnera one of the more active towns in the province. With the sulphur mines closed, the future of the town has been directed towards textile production. As regards the town's art and architecture, the main church with its impressive monumental facade (12th century) and the church of Sant'Antonio di Padova (17th century) are both worth noting. In the surrounding area of Valguarnera, not very far from the town, is the Rossomanno wood, an attraction for hikers and nature lovers. It was the Forestry Commission which planted most of the present trees, especially eucalyptus and conifers. Human intervetion, even though it has added little from a nature point of view, has nevertheless made the landscape more interesting. On the Rossomanno hills, moreover, remains of indigenous civilisations, dating back from the 14th to the 7th centuries BC, have been uncovered. Among the monuments worth visiting, just outside the town, is the medieval "Castello di Gresti" or "Pietratagliata".
