The Territory

Along the 121 main road, heading in the direction of Palermo, you come to Villarosa, a small town built by Duke Placido Notarbartolo on the ruins of a farmhouse which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693. The town went through a prosperous period in the 19th century, with the exploitation of the numerous sulphur mines in the area. Its orthogonal plan, draw up by the painter Rosa Ciotti di Resuttano, allows for a smooth tour through the ordely streets in the town. Among its more interesting monuments, the 18th century main church dedicated to San Giacomo Maggiore and Palazzo Ducale are both worth seeing. Your visit to Villarosa however, begins before the residential area. On the 121 main road, you will come to the cut-off for the railway station on your left.It is worthwhile taking the detour. A small country station, destined to be closed, has been skilfully trasformed into a extremely original railway and rural museum. Another detour leads to Lake Morello, an artificial basin into which the river Morello is made to flow. The lake basin offers landscapes of considerable natural interest.
